Waterproofing materials are materials for engineering structures, buildings and constructions protection from deleterious water and chemically aggressive liquids (acids, alkalies and so on) impact. According to its application, materials can be divided into antifiltrational, anticorrosive and waterproofing; according to basic material – at asphaltic, mineral, plastic and metallic.
Asphaltic waterproofing materials
This kind of materials is used as oil bitumen with mineral dust, sand and spall that can be extracted when heating, bitum thinning up with volatile solvents (asphalt lacquer and enamels) or their emulsifying in water (asphalt enamels, emulsion slurries, cool asphalts). Bitums and asphalts are used for painting and plastering construction surface (asphalt waterproofing), for control joints waterstopping (asphalt water stops), for building units dipping and when producing masonry units, generally roll ones (asbestos base, brizol, sealing membrane, fibre-glass roofing material, quills).
Mineral waterproofing materials
Mineral waterproofing materials are prepared basing on cements, clay and other mineral adhesives; they are used for paint (cement and silicate paint) and plaster coverings (cement gunned material and plaster), for massive waterproofing constructions (waterblocking backfill clay locks, hydrator) for antifiltrational protection. Mineral waterproofing materials development occurs due to surfactant and other special high makeup grinding admixtures application.
Plastic waterproofing materials
Plastic materials are used for paint (ethoxyline, polyether, polyvinyl, ethyne laquers and paints), plaster (polymer mortars and betons, phazol) and glued (polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride films, oppanol) waterproofing surface and for waterstopping construction control joints (rubber joint fillers, rubber and polyvinyl chloride contour tapes, glass elastics). Availability and scope of these materials production keeps increasing; thiokol sealants, epoxy paint, glass-reinforced polyesters and polyethylene covering are evolving the most.
Metallic waterproofing materials
To metallic waterproofing materials can be referred: latten, copper, lead, common and stainless steel sheets that are used for surficial waterproofing and for waterstopping control joints in most important cases (basins, dams, core walls). Aluminum and copper foil is used for coating and roll waterproofing materials reinforcement (metal sealing membrane, foil sealing membrane, sisalkraft). Metallic materials are gradually being placed by plastic ones and glass fiber plastics.
