Water proofing is a protection of engineering structures, buildings and constructions from water encroachment or construction material from circumambient or filtering water or other corrosive liquid negative effect. Water proofing provides normal building, construction or equipment service, increases its safety and lifetime.
Water proofing materials
For water proofing they use materials that include:
- metal sheets;
- roll and sheet materials (for example, geosynthetics or PVC-membranes);
- liquid application materials (for example, liquid rubber, exaporated cork coating);
- mineral matrice materials;
- bentonite clay materials;
- dry penetrant building mixes.
Water proofing types
Foundation water proofing is considered to be one of the most important and technologically-difficult building phase.
Different foundation water proofing materials are used: from classic roll to injectable materials in case of troubled ground coat. Construction water proofing includes treatment of so-called cold joints, formed as a result of non-uniform monolith, interblock joints and microcracks filling, appeared as a result of soil shrinkage.
For floor water proofing so-called penetrant materials are used. They are good for any moisture penetration protection even for basement floors with significant cracks. However, only the roll materials with joint sizing can give fully guaranteed result — the film forms blind and impermeable barrier for water, it is preferably to be used before cap-construction erection.
Floor water proofing in bathroom is made by continuous bitumen or polymer roll material carpet application. Besides, the method of painting waterproofing, in other words method of special varnish in a number of layers is widespread enough. The problem of this method is a relatively short period of exploitation which is usually less than six years.
Basement wall water proofing is usually made by coating materials. In case of water abundance in soil and drainage excavation such method can be ineffective enough and can lead to humidity and mustiness occurrence. In this case it’s necessary to use the injectable materials for the internal basement water proofing.
New water proofing technologies
The construction water proofing technology «white bathtub» is widely used nowadays. The technology is based on the waterproof concretes use and on the construction and installation works complex wherein the water penetrates into massive concrete monolithic block at an insignificant depth.
