The main objective of any roofing is to effectively protect the house from any kind of weather activity. Today the building sector offers different roofing materials, each of which has its own advantages and disadvantages. But there is one demand that all the roofing material manufacturers put forward — it is a roof coating consisting at list of a waterproofing layer, and in some cases — of several layers of different materials. If you make your home improvement by yourself, it will be useful for you to know how to perform roof waterproofing and vapor-proofing on your own.
Roof coating structure
Present-day personal houses can have a roof of one, two, four sloping surfaces, also compound multiple gable roofs with attic floors, turrets, and so on. Depending on the fact if the roof void is used as a living room (attic floor) or not, the roof coating layers will vary.
For shingles specialists recommend to also lay a layer of a windproof membrane. Between the waterproofing layer and roof material an air gap must be kept. The air should be free to move from eaves to crease. For this purpose bores are made under both the eave overhang and ridgy element in order to make the roof “breathe”.
If your house has a flat roof with small dip angles, the flat roof waterproofing will depend on its type. Ballasted accessible roof areas, besides the double heat insulation layer, have also double waterproofing. And for this purpose roof membranes and liquid polymer materials can be used. If the flat roof is not operated, there is no need in double waterproofing layer, one will be enough.
Liquid waterproofing materials
Roof waterproofing on your own can be performed using special mastics based on bitum with polymer admixtures. An absolute advantage here is the absence of any joints and cuts. The applied mastic has perfect adhesion to any surface. The mastic can be one- and multi-component. The roof waterproofing with liquid rubber based on a two-component composition — emulsion+reagent accelerator — has got the largest extension. The mixture is applied to the roof with special equipment. After the composition has set, it transforms into a thin elastic film on the surface of any material. These works can be performed only during the warm season, but the roof can be operated in a large temperature range: from -50°С up to + 98°С.
Any roof waterproofing material can be used for its performance. As a result the selection of specific materials will depend on the house design, your preferences and on a certain amount of money presence. The comfort demands certain expenses, roof waterproofing and heat insulation significantly increase the comfort level.
